I'm eating my way through Toronto this Spring/Summer and this restaurant, La Banane is the second stop on my list. A partnership between chef Brandon Olsen and King Street Food Company, Brandon and his partner Sandra Keenlyside opened up this French restaurant on Ossington.

You are greeted by this amazing raw bar as you walk in.

As usual, my drink of choice for the summer, an Aperol Spritz.

We sat by the bar and I forgot to take a picture of their cocktails menu but they do have a pretty extensive list.

The menu

Pretzels with a mustard sauce. I found the pretzels a little too salty for my taste. The sauce was just ok.

Softshell crab is in season and the batter on this reminded me of chef's Olsen's famous fried chicken.

Liver and Onions - this was delicious! The liver was light and smooth, like a mousse consistency and who doesn't love caramelized onions?

Smoked sweetbreads - I'm not a sweetbreads fan but my girlfriend is. I tasted the sauce and it was tasty with lobster and oyster mushrooms.

White asparagus (in the background) and duck breast. This was delicious but not something that would make me want to eat it again. It was pretty ordinary.

Of course there was dessert! No meal is complete without it. Orange blossom with pistachios, this was like a meringue and tasted very fresh and light. Nothing special but......

Definitely the highlight of my meal. The Ziggy Starburst Disco Egg! This beautifully hand painted egg is the most expensive dessert on the menu at $50 but it's totally worth the money.

Once opened, seven hand rolled truffles await you and bits of cranberries and some bubbly arrow chocolates. This was absolutely delicious! I turned the egg on its' side and carefully used the spoon to crack it open nicely for this picture :)
Overall, a good experience and I would go back to try more dishes on their menu. Chef Olsen also owns a chocolate shop called CXBO at 193 Baldwin St. it's definitely worth the visit too. La Banane is located at 227 Ossington Ave.
Thanks for stopping by!
